Introduction

The disturbed conditions existing in the Kashmir valley since 1990, due to the onset of militancy led to the mass  exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits and some families belonging to Sikh and   Muslim communities. The number of such families was estimated around   57000. Most of the families got settled or sought refuge in and around   Jammu and some in the other states of the country.Uprooting of such    families from their homes and hearths as a result of the turmoil in the    valley caused an all round upheavel leading to various unfortunate   developments at the state, national and international levels.

In order to look after the welfare of such families who had to leave    the   valley in difficult conditions leaving both movable and immovable    property behind and to meet their day to day requirements, the state    government created the Relief Organisation for looking after such families    and to provide them immediate relief such as Cash Assistance, Free Ration, Shelter etc.

The organisation since 1990 has been continuously providing every type of assistance to the families putting up in and around Jammu and also under the instructions of Govt. of India, other states, where ever the migrants got settled are also providing some facilities to the migrant families.

The Relief Organisation is headed by Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner and is working under the administrative control of the Revenue Department. More than 30 field offices are functional in and around Jammu for providing of necessary assistance to the migrants.
